I have moved on to, what I see as a more rewarding situation at Voyager Expanded Learning.

I will be helping build their next-generation learning tools to help kids learn to read. I am very excited to finally being able to put my skills to use in order to help others.

I will be posting alot about PureMVC and WebORB as those are 2 things we will be using heavily over the next several months on a few projects.

An AIR gotcha

I am working on an AIR application at work and I thought I would post a little gotcha when creating an application that does not use the default system chrome.

The documentation says to set the systemChrome to none, and set transparent to true and that will turn off the chrome... well... almost. If you are building a Flex based AIR application, you also have to set showFlexChrome to false as well, or you still get the flex chrome... Hope this helps someone :)

How To: Dynamic Datagrid

I have an example to share with you all. I am on a project that needed to be able to load a datagrids columns dynamically. Now, I had done something similar at one point, but not like this. I figured I would share this with you all(without giving away project secrets) a simple example of how to define datagrid columns and their data at runtime.

  [Box lm9kiqbidp ]

End of my first day...

Well, today is the end of my first day here at Cynergy. I have to say this has been one of the best 'first' days I have had.

Tomorrow I am supposed to be 'initiated' into the DC team, lol. Adding and viewing employees is what is working. I figured I would leave it to you to see if you can get edits working and to use that as an avenue for you to ask questions.

The SQL scripts are for SQL 2005 but I can make ones for 2000 or MySQL. Today I am taking my wife to see a surgeon. Looks like she is going to have to have her gall bladder removed here soon.

She is supposed to go on a mission trip to Mexico this weekend, but we are not sure if she will be able to go or not.

Flex 3 Beta - Profiler

I love the profiler.. I took an application I built with Flex 2, recompiled under Flex 3 and started the profiler against the profile swf. Man, it is very cool to see what is going on in the swf. I am going to be spending lots and lots of time with the profiler over the next few weeks.

Check this out for more info and known issues with the profiler.

  http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Flex_3:Feature_Introductions:_Performance_and_Memory_Profiling

    ***** WARNING *******

to start a profile session, your browser must be closed. Once 1 profile session has been started, more will work. This drove me nuts until I figured this out.

  ********************

Just a thought dump...

This is week has been a busy one. From my wife's vistubular rehab, to going back on my insulin pump, to work, to family, etc.

My wifes rehab went better than I thought it would. She did pass out during one part but smelling salts brought back pretty quick. She now has things to do everyday to train her brain to compensate for when she gets really dizzy.

I went back on my insulin pump as of yesterday and I am already feeling better. I went off of it for several months to let my tissue heal from having been on the pump for 2 years. For those that dont know, I have Type 1 diabetes. That mean my pancreas does not make insulin and I must inject it daily in order to live.

My day job is going well although I feel kinda stuck. I have the skills to do some pretty cool and useful things, but the application I am working on will need lots of time to catch up. I have been building a testing module for the last couple of months and it has been interesting. From building the UI to manage the creation of the test, to the assignment and reporting of completed tests, to the actual UI to take a test. Each part has its difficulties in which I love figuring out the answers to make them work.

I am also *finally* realizing the true power of components(as seen from my last blog entry).

I know I am rambling, but I just needed to do a brain dump about this week.. Oh ya, I have been really studying OOP more so that I *know* that I get *it*, lol.

A count down timer component

On a project I am working on, I needed a count down timer. The first iteration was just built into the MXML file that needed the counter, but I soon wanted/needed to use this in other places. I also need more control over the layout so I decided to make this a component.

One thing I am finding about making this a component is that the code is much cleaner now and actually smaller that the original inline timer I made. I released this last night and realized that it has some bugs, but I have fixed those. I am including a MXML app that uses the counter so you can see it in action.

To change where it starts, just change the minutes attribute and there you go.

  Get the zip here

You are free to use this however you see fit.

Today is going to....

Vaccum! ie, suck. In a little over an hor my wife will begin her vistubluar rehab for meneires disease. What is that you ask? Well, basically its like epilepsy except that insteas of getting siezures, you get uncontrollably dizzy.

There are days & nights that the slightest movement sends her into a dizzy spell. These 'spells' as I call them can last a few minutes to a few days.

Today, she starts the rehab for this, as there is no cure, but they will be triggering her vertigo, which is why the rest of today is going to vaccum.

Do you twitter?

  I am now on twitter

  http://twitter.com/grumpee

Simple Flex/CF Remoting Example

Hello all, in response to some questions on the FlexCoders list, I have made this very simple remoting example.

Before I get into the code, I just want to clarify what you need to run this example. All you need is CF 7.02, thats it.

Below is the MXML/AS code for the example.

In the above code, there are 2 functions that run. The first one is the initApp() and loadConfirm(event).

The initApp() runs when the application is created. its only job at the moment is to call a method in the remoting.cfc called confirmCFC.

The loadConfirm function sets a bindable variable to the response of the remote call's response. The variable is bound to a label components text attribute.

Here is the code for the cfc.

Thats it. Feel free to IM me with questions or post here on the blog.
